How to Transfer Files Between Two Computers Without a USB Drive

3 min read · Updated 2026-09-12

Two laptops, no USB stick, and no permission to install anything. This is the situation passphrase-based transfers were built for: the only shared infrastructure the two machines need is a web browser.

The method

On the first computer, open droploder.com and drag your files onto the drop zone. When the upload completes you get a word passphrase.

On the second computer, open the same site, switch to the Receive tab, and type the passphrase. Every file in the batch is available, individually or all at once.

Because you type a few words rather than a long URL, this works even when the two machines cannot copy and paste between them — a locked-down work desktop, a borrowed laptop, or a machine you are only using for five minutes.

Why not the alternatives

Network shares require both machines on the same network and permission to configure sharing, which is often exactly what you do not have.

USB drives are fine until the file needs to go to a computer in a different building, or the port is blocked by policy.

Cloud sync installs a client and syncs far more than the three files you actually wanted to move.

Emailing yourself works, but caps out at attachment limits and clutters your mailbox.

Good habits

On a shared or public computer, close the tab when you are done — the passphrase is the only thing anyone would need.

Remember that a guest transfer is single-use and disappears once the second machine downloads it: this is a transfer, not storage. Save what you download somewhere permanent.

Use the description field to label the batch when you are moving several sets of files in a row.

Try it right now

Upload your files, get a word passphrase, download them anywhere.
